I was wondering if anyone could answer this for me. If I dig some fence post holes this fall, is there a good chance they will cave before next spring/summer?

Yes , especially if you get a lot of rain or snow.

I agree, you can be sure that the holes will at least partially cave in due to rain, snow and freezing. It somewhat depends on your soil conditions and where you live. Can you give more details?

I agree that installations of the posts may not be as strong, but I am wondering whether the hole could be dug and lined with burlap and filled back in. It would be easier to do in the spring.

But frankly, I wouln't even bother. Only the holes near objects need to be dug caefully with a post-hole digger. All the other ones can be drilled using a two person hole digger. It's basically a BIG drill bit attached to a gas engine. They can be rented. Hardly anywork at all.
