Hello, I would just like to ask about our daschund not eating. He is 2 months old and is a mini version, when we first got him he loves to eat to a point that he's belly is bloated, but after 2 weeks the only thing that he likes is milk. He eats some dog food (aplo) but only when we hand feed him. I'm worried that he might be sick that's why he refuses to eat, although he is still very energetic and loves to play. Fore sure he is going to love hand feeding ! I would suggest that you put some food down and when heis hungry he will eat , and quite probably wait for you to coax him again. You can't outrule a medical problem though but if he is doing everything else normally and you are satisfied with what you what you see then I would go with discontinuing hand feeding. These are not dumb animals you know, they know which side their bread is buttered on!

I just got a new puppy too, and sometimes he would not eat either. The reason he would not eat sometimes is because I was feeding him too much. This sounds like what you are doing. If your doxie is eating until his belly is bloated that is way too much. What you should do is look at the bag or the can and find the chart that says how much you are supposed to feed you puppy. Next you will find how old your puppy is and how much he weighs and then look at the amount. This will be the amount that you feed him throughout the whole day NOT just at one feeding. So for example, if it says feed him 1 cup a day. You want to feed him 1/4 a cup 4 times a day. Puppies need to be fed all throughout the day because they are playing all the time and their metabolism is high so they burn a lot of energy. If you do this then your puppy should be at a healthy weight and most of the time be eager to eat. Sometimes he just may not be ready to eat when you put it in the bowl but never fear when he is hungry he will eat. Oh and I feed my puppy each time about 4-5 hours apart and it seems to work well but each puppy is different. And please try not to feed him from your hand, this will cause more behavior issues and then he will never eat from a bowl.

Your puppy should be working for his food. Treat toys (kongs, buster cubes, etc.) that make him work to get food are good. So is carrying his food around with you and using it to reward him for coming (just say come and give him a few pieces), sitting, leaving things alone when told, walking on leash, moving out of your way, settling down nicely, going potty outside, etc.
