Well, I'm replacing an old ceiling fan with a light. The layout from where the fan was is a red, a white, a black, and a ground. It was a fan that had a light set on it also, a lower and an upper. There are 2 switches in the room, one that turned on the fan , and the other that turned on the lights. That's it, no other switches in the room. I capped off the red and hooked the others up and I keep throwing the breaker. I can see on the red wire where I capped it off looks like burn marks on the cap. I need a little help. Thanks

Assuming you connected white to white and black to black, it sounds like you wired correctly. Check to insure that all of the wire nuts completely cover all of the bare wire. If all connections are well insulated, remove light and check for continuity between the white and black of light with bulbs removed. You should not have continuity. Light could be defective. If light checks out, remove switches and tell us what wires you have there.
Does breaker trip if both switches are off? If you do not have meter to check for continuity, remove light, cap all wires and see if breaker trips. Switches on. If it does not, that would indicate possibility of defective light.

OK. Ill try a different light and see what happens. I'll get to it Saturday evening. Also, since I don't need the fan switch will it be OK just to cap it off(the red wire). I can't trust my kids to not turn that switch on. Thanks. I'll post an update tomorrow night.

Try connecting the light to the red and white from the ceiling,and cap off the black.

How was the old fan connected?
