People too often feel that once something is said, it can never be taken back, you're stuck with it. WHY? Why do you think that? Why do you accept that? LOTS of people do, but it's nuts.
Your feelings about things will change. Not just this boy, but many things. AND, you will accidentally say things that aren't true and it will come back to haunt you. When that happens you have to IMMEDIATELY confess what you did and correct the info. If you do that, the problem ends immediately.
Are people going to get their feelings hurt sometimes when you do this? Sure. So what? Is fear of hurting someone's feelings reason enough to tell or continue to tell HUGE lies? Of course not!
Having said all that, I know it's hard to admit when you said something you shouldn't have. But you HAVE to learn to do it, and the sooner you do it, the sooner the problem AND the stress and fear goes away. The longer you put it off, the more stress you give yourself and in the end you have to 'fess up anyway. Right?
So, the answer is still the same, you have to tell him, you have to NOT make stuff up when you do it, too.
"Johnny, I know I told you I liked you, and the truth is I wanted to, but it's just not turning out that way. I hope you understand. I think you're a nice guy, but we're never going to be anything other than friends, OK? I hope you don't hate me, but I'd rather be a friend who tells the truth, so that's what I'm doing. Take care, see you around school."
