Bridging gap between new sink and old drain
    Hey guys,

I'm installing a new 49'' vanity where the sink is about 6 inches to the right of the current (old) sink. I realized that the drain pipe that's coming out of the wall does not align with the new sink. Is there a way to bridge this 6'' gap? If so, what's the best way to go about it? Also, is it all right to reuse the old P-trap or should I buy a new one?

Thanks a lot for your time.

You can reuse the P trap, especially if its PVC. The wall piece should be removed from the wall and attached to the end of the J bend. Measrue the distance and angle you need to bridge. Buy a tail pipe which will be cut if needed with a PVC compression 45 elbow installed. Put the elbow on the old wall piece and the tail piece on the other end into the wall

A 22 1/2 degree elbow will do wonders for misalignments. Also there are plastic tailpieces that will bend some.

Very correct, the 22 will not slow down the drain anywhere nears as much as a 45 or a accordion tail piece.

    Assuming 1 1/2" PVC pipe.
    Purchase

    a regular 22 1/2 ell,
    a 22 1/2 street ell,
    A 1 1/2 male threaded trap adapter,
    PVC trap with arm,
short length of 1 1/2" PVC

Cut off existing pipe out of wall about 2" from wall.
Put regular 22 1/2 ell on stub out
Put street 22/12 ell on regular
Put trap on tail pipe and turn desired direction
Put short piece of pipe in street ell
Make pipe point to trap by adjusting the ells.
By adjusting the regular ell up and the street down you can make the pipe point exactly at the trap.
When you have the pipe point correctly, mark the pipe out of the wall and the ells with alignment marks.
Remove fittings, prime and glue, realigning marks.
Install trap arm, measure and cut pipe, install trap adapter. Connect trap arm.

The male trap adapter looks very much like a regular male threaded adapter but is slightly larger inside to allow the trap arm to fit inside. Usually comes with compression nut and nylon seals. Get the right thing
