Ok, I have my home computer which we have internet service through at&t for the computer, NOw we have a lap top and all I want to do is be able to use our internet service for our lap top. I go to connect to a network option on my lap top but I don't know if my network is one of them and if its not how do I get my network on there??
Ps. I don't want to disconnect my home computer and plug in the laptop... just want to wireless

Can I safely assume this is broadband internet?

The best way would be to get a wireless router (netgear, linksys, etc) then hook the internet into the router, from there, the PC would plug into the router and the laptop could hook in through wireless.

Find out what type of wireless your laptop is. (B,G,N) and get the router accordingly.

second post summed up my post ;) lol

broadband=High speed (DSL or CABLE)

what is the make/model of the laptop?
The specs (look for wireless protocol) will tell you if its:
802.11b <- B max 11 Mbit/s
802.11g <- G max 54 Mbit/s
802.11n <- N max 300 Mbit/s

this is what you will match the router to...
If your laptop is B then you can get a B,G,N type router (I would not get a B router though)
if laptop is G then get a G or N

N is the most expensive but is backward compatible and will allow you to expand in the future

let me know to laptop make/model and I can help u find out what it is

No, don't worry, you can do this :) its easier than you think

OK... I looked up the specs for that laptop: (here: Gateway Support - MT6821 Notebook Specifications)

Integrated 10/100 Ethernet LAN
802.11a/b/g wireless LAN <---- see the a/b/g it will handle up to g

So, you want to get a G or N router (G will be fine and cheaper)

Here is a good Router: Newegg.com - LINKSYS WRT54G IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Broadband Router - Wireless Routers

But, this is for broadband. Do you have broadband? (Cable or DSL?. there should be a 'box' that a cable or phone line goes into that has lights flashing, then a cord goes to your computer)

If you have this... then get the linksys. You take the cord from the box (modem) and plug it into the router, then your main computer plugs into one of the other plugs in the back

Then the laptop will hook in through wireless. There are instructions and they are easy :)
If you get stuck... then just ask. We can get you up and running.
