My carpet in my bedroom is wet. 1 1/2 foot diameter. There is cemet under the carpet. There is not a roof leak. My water bill has been higher than normal. What can be causing the wet spot?

Unfortunately it sounds like a water pipe leak. In one subdivision here in Tampa area, practically every house had to have their house re-piped within 20 years. They all had copper pipe, and the water was corrosive for the municipal supply in the area. There are several factors that play into the corrosion including temp, ph, alkalinity, hardness, tds, disinfection. It is not uncommon on municipal water. Here in central Florida, it is a fairly easy fix, although costly. They re-pipe the entire house by coming in from overhead with PVC, and CPVC. That's not an option much further north of us because the pipes would freeze in the attic.

You can probably hear the leak if you put a glass down on the floor with your ear against it.

There is another option besides a repipe job. Our water south of Tampa isn't so aggressive. We call in a leak detection service such as Sleuth. They locate the leak, jackhammer up the slab and bag the dirt so all the plumber has to do is replace the faulty pipe, test out and patch the floor. This can be done in a few hours without the expense of repiping the house. Your choice! Good luck in whatever you decide. Tom

"bedroom is wet. 1 1/2 foot diameter" in my house this means the dog was inside again. However, Tom and Al are probably right in your situation. Two great solutions , one for every pocket book. Just a thought to call your insurance agaent and ask what is your deductible and is this break covered. If so definitely ask for the overhead CPVC

How old is the house, and what type of pipes do you have?

Can you peel up the carpet to see if there is a crack in the floor, if so do that.That will pin point the problem for sure.. I don't no how hany you are put id rent a small hilti jack hammer and chip it out and fix the problem myself.Even if your not handy with plumping like soldering ,breaking up the floor yourself is easy and would save you some $$$$.All the other gentelmens ideas are great :).. I like to do it the cheapest and easiest way on my pocket book,by cheapest I mean do it yourself ;)
