I want to install 12x12 granite tiles as a new counter top. Do I need to install backer board? I would like to butt them to one another, and if I do, do I still need to grout them?

I don't think you have to use cement backer board but it might be good because of the possibility of water seeping through the tile joints. You can get a 1/4 inch thick backer board (the last time I looked).

Hardicaker board comes in both 1/2" and 1/4", remarkibly for about the same price. Glue and screw it into a plywood base covering the entire cabinet surface.

Kind of think that article was discussing installing a granite top, not tiles. I'll try to find it. John's been gone a few days, maybe when he comes back we'll know if he needs more help.

I skimmed through the article it was about using 12 x 12s. A solid granite top is not a homeowner project

We used concrete backer board when using marble 12 x 12 tiles. We grouted and sealed. I would be concerned with bacteria problems if you don't grout.

Very good point Emland. I recommend an pre-mixed stainproof epoxy grout. Easy to use, easy to clean.
