We are considering replacing a stand up shower with a regular size tub in a small bathroom with a smaller than average door frame. It's an upstairs bathroom. My husband is convinced that we will need to knock out all the door frames in our house to get the tub up since he says a tub is wider than a door frame. (Mind you, I'm going to have a plumber do this work, not a do-it-yourself job for us;) ). My questions are as follows: Will a regular size tub fit through a regular size door frame (of shich there will be at least two? Second question.. . What' the general process for removing a shower unit and replacing with a tub?

Standard tub 30" wide X 15 " high X 60" long. Mimium "standard" door is 24" wide and 80" high. Tub easily go through door. General process of replacing shower with tub would be tear out shower to subfloor, and walls to studs. Re-plumb drain and water supply pipng. Replace wall material and re-tile or install tub surround. Probably have to do some floor tiling. By this time you will have decided to redo entire bathroom so plan on it. New vanity and sink, faucets, lights and mirror or medicine cabinet. I think Hubby already knows this.

Harold has told you about standard tub... absolutely no issue getting these into home as long as stand on one end.

I got to wondering if this was going to a standard tub only... or a one-piece tub and shower unit..?

If this is a one-piece tub and shower unit you're asking about then your husband would be correct in being concerned about getting the unit into the bathroom.

These units are usually 30-32" wide and over 6feet tall so very awkward and almost impossible to get into place as one-piece. In these cases, they make multi. piece tub and shower units...can be two-piece (tub and wall separate), three-piece (tub and two 1/2 walls), or even four pieces (tub and 3 walls). They also make a remodelers tub and shower unit that is 28" wide, but I rarely recommend these as they are so small/tight. Could also go with the standard tub and wall surround or tile job as you are probably doing... just wanted to cover all bases.

Anyway, just got to wondering if this was the case. Let us know if have any more questions about this remodel. We are glad to help where we can...

Thanks for your responses. And yes, I imagine my husband has already guessed that a total remodel is likely if the take the plunge with a new tub (no pun intended) which is why he's probaby trying to come up with excuses to keep me from pursuing it any further. ;) Anyway, thanks for your input!
