I don't know the equation to use
Two locomotives approach each other each going 95 km/ hr. if they are 8.5 km apart, how long will it be before they reach each other?

Have a simple sketch, this will help you to see where they will meet if they are going at the same speed. If you can solve it, then it's OK. But if you are still stuck, post again.

I have a sketch. Mathematically I can't find the anwer. My books says it will take 2.7 minutes for the two trains to meet each other.

If they are 8.5km apart, and they are moving in at the same speed, they should meet halfway of their distance, that is 8.5/2. Can you do it now?

The question doesn't ask me where they'll meet, its when they will collide...

Now, using the equation Speed = Distance / Time, solve for time, you just have the distance, you already have the speed! Got it? Well I got it 2.7 min.
