    Generator inlet plug - 50amp versus 30amp
I have a generator with a continuous run of 7000 watts and a surge of 8750 watts. I bought a manual transfer switch to install in the house. It has a peak of 12,500 watts. The inlet plug is an Nema L14-50 and is incompatible with my generator as it has a Nema L14-30 plug. My question is, can I buy a Nema L14-30 and install it in the panel or maybe change the end of the extension cord to a Nema L14-50 female plug with a Nema L14-30 male plug in the other end to plug into the generator?

Couple of Very Good People on Code here. In all cases, The wire must be protected by the breaker.Does the Manual Transfer have several breakers?

Yes, it has 2-30 amp, 2-20 amp and 6-15 amp breakers. However the biggest thing I would hook up is a well pump on the 30amps and MAYBE the refrigerator. Everything else would be minimal lights.
