    Shoplifting under $10
I was caught shoplifting an item under $10. A form was filled out and they said the store was going to fine me. The police weren't called and I didn't sign anything. What will happen next? Will this be on my record? Will I actually be fined?

They may fine you.. or maybe just to scare you... but it won't be on your record if the police weren't involved. If they do fine you, I would pay it. AND STOP SHOPLIFTING!!

For it to be on your record, you would have to charged by the police and have a conviction in court.

Case law has allowed stores to fine shoplifters as a deterrant to the crime. The store will keep a record of the incident and if you are caught again, they will probably press charges. If the store is in a mall they may share the info with mall security.
