It seems like every time someone in the family takes a show up stairs, my floor drain in the basement seems to over flow. I can look down in the floor drain and see water. If I flush the toilet in the basement, I see the water start to move. Is there something I can do?

You have a partial blockage in the branch line of the shower and the main stack, after the connection of the floor drain. Try snaking the floor drain, you may or may not be able to get snake through trap of floor drain.

Roto-Rooter time ! The overflow shows up in your basement floor drain because it is the lowest open outlet in your system. Do as hkstroud suggested...

Is there a clean out in the floor approximately 18" from the foundation wall? Search for one before you call Roto boy. If there is none then make your call because, like Harold says, you will find it very difficult to rod through the floor drain trap.

If you can not locate a clean out snake the line from the roof vent closest to the point where the sewer leaves your house. Put out enough cable to reach the street or the septic tank and by the way are you on a septic tank?
