I am ready (after 31 years) to finally build a garage for myself. The problem is well meaning friends, my question is concerning the cement pad or floor for the garage, should I put just a 4" flat pad or should I build a 1' footer and pour the footer and pad at the same time. I live in an area that is cold in the winter with an above average of snow. I appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks

I don't see a problem pouring footing and floor together but 4 inches is too shy in depth if I understood your question correctly. Get some advice from sources in your area on best depth to use.

A slab garage fllor is generally a 5" thick slab with a 12" curb, all set on a flat gravel base. That 12" part is called a built up curb or thickened edge footing. You probably will need a building permit, when you try to pull a permit you will encounter the local building inspector who may give you slightly different local codes or requirements.
