We are looking for a cap for a washer drain that would prevent the water from backing up in the drain. The dwelling unit was built 42 years ago and the washer drain cannot accommodate the amount of water coming out of a newer washer. I have been told there is a cap you can buy that prevents the water from coming back up. The washer drain has had a water jetter used on it, a snake used on it, and appears to be clear. A full washer draining out water will cause it to back up. When a smaller load of laundry is done, there is not so much of a problem. Can you help us find this cap.

Ahhh.. the old 1.5" copper drain pipes... just not large enough to accommodate the great volume of water discharging from some of the newer washing machines.

They make a fernco phg laundry connector that is sold at home depot under same name (near all the other fernco caps)... see 1st picture below. However, it has holes on side top of cap so may not be your best choice here.

They also make other reducing fernco couplings that you may be able to use here... depends on what your pipes are made of. See 2nd picture.

Also, if PVC (white) or ABS (black) pipe then you should only need to purchase an 1.5" pvc x 1.5" tubular desanco fitting or an 1.5" pvc x 1.25" tubular desanco fitting and then cement this onto the pipe (using pvc primer and cement) and then install the hose through the compression nut and then install hose into pipe and tighten the nut.. see last picture.

All of these are sold at home depot and Lowe's.

One of these options should work for you. Let me know...

... but please, be advised that overflowing stand pipe is a sign of either inadequate pipe size or blockage in your sewer. Concentrate on cleaning your sewer line and / or upgrading your washer drain to eliminate overflow problem completely and in proper way.
