    Switch replacement in ceiling fan
    I got help on this site for replacing a ceiling fan switch E1116997. Thanks.. it sort of worked. I did the following: L-black, 1-gray, 2-brown, 3-green. The fan works now! But here is my new problem: I can't seem to turn it off. Before I broke the chain and messed around trying to replace the switch, the only way to turn the fan on or off was to pull the chain... there is no wall switch to control the fan. I am not sure if my memory serves me well... was the black wire not connected to anything when I started this little project? Hope someone can advise.

    The black wire is your hot wire bring the power into the switch, it must be connected for anything to ever work.

    You probably have the wrong replacement switch. See:
