    Water leaking into the house
Hi, I just read the other question about water leaking and I have the same problem. My house has brick wall and cement floor. In one bedroom downstairs the carpet close to the wall is wet. It seems there are cracks between the wall and floor. Shall I just use mortar and sealer to fix it? Thanks.

You can use the mortar to fix the outside cracks, but you need to divert any water away from the foundation so this does not happen again. Get gutters and have the downspouts divert the water way, way away from your foundation. Also, you could probably use a bit of backfill in that location also. Wet carpeting must be addressed immediately and the water and excess moisture dried out or else it's going to be MOLD CITY in that room and all throughout your entire home. Mold and mildew are serious health concerns. If the rug has been wet for more than a few weeks - rip it up and throw the rug and padding away as it is already way too late to properly treat them for mold or mildew damage.

Mortar no but yes to hydraulic cement. Some patching cements actually expand a hairand seal cracks better but your issue is, little twinkie says, the water. You say downstairs, do you mean the basement. A home with a basement may need a curtain drain and sump pump to get rid of ground water. Tell us more about the house.

Thanks for the help. But no, it's not a basement. It's just a bedroom downstairs because the house has two levels. There is a carport outside the room and the cement on the carport floor may be a little higher than the cement floor in the room. I guess this is the reason that rainwater gets in through the crack.

The carport floor may be the biggest issue. If it is higher than the floor and gets rain it may be holding the water until it finds a crack. Most exterior floors will slightly move from season to seaon so do not use mortar or cement. Seal with a good exterior silicone selant made for concrete. You can buy this off the net Bondaflex 100 Silicone Sealant :: Concrete Countertop Specialties or visit a home center.
