Bush BTV 18 TV/Vid combo picture problems
After about 5 minutes the picture becomes vertically compressed to a 1cm horiz band in the middle of the screen.
    Any pointers much appreciated.

    Hello Dunks

That indicates a problem with the verical deflection (display) section.
Either a faulty component or a lose contact.
Does hitting the side of the televison with your hand solve the problem? (Not too hard, of course : just check for a lose contact)

    Hi Credendovidis,
    Many thanks,
    It is a BTV18SIL/VA Ser No 553-4956933
Have tried the banging bit but no effect. Have checked both the Power PCB and main PCB for dry joints - a few ropey looking ones which I resoldered but fault still apparent.

After about 5 minutes the picture shrinks to a 10 cm Horizontal band which then drops quickly to a 1cm band. So have a feeling it will be something failing when it warms up.

Reluctant to take to Engineer as the cost of repair will be more than the cost of the Telly, daughter now pestering for an LCD...

    Hello Dunks

Than it is certainly a temperature problem. Most probably a leaking capacitor that slowly heats up some transistor or IC towards breakdown.

Sorry, but that is impossible to fault find without proper circuit diagram and tools like multimeter and oscilloscope.

Bring it to a repairshop and ask them for a (free) rough quotation for the repair, and take it from there.
