We just bought an older house and are in the process of replacing 1960's wood paneling with drywall. The thermostat had been "painted" onto the paneling (many times over). After I removed the screws, I had to pry the t'stat away from the wall, which caused the wires to become dislodged from their respective terminals. I have NO idea what color wire goes to which connection. I tried to figure it out, but now I'm only getting heat!!

I have a Rheem heat pump and a Honeywell thermostat. Can anyone please help me put it back together... It's getting hot here in South Alabama!

Can you get back with the colors of each wire, and the labels on each terminal , usually letters, on the thermostat?

Sure... My wire colors are: White, Orange, Brown, Red, Green, Yellow, and Blue (it doesn't look like the blue wire was being used because the wire isn't "stripped" like the other colors --- but don't take my word for it!). The connectors on the thermostat are labeled: X, R, Y1 (with a "jumper" to W1) W2, G, B, O, E, & L.

This is one way, there are other important terminals, but only so many wires,and the if they use standard color code then I should have it right

Look under the blue terminal, there should be a piece of wire broken off under the screw.

This is a heat pump system, and somewhat complicated, and anyone could have used any color code.

Give it a try, start with the one red, and then each one after that ,no worry casing any damage, a thermostat is just several switches.

But you must check that it all works properly when done, then if not you can cause damage. Here is where you may have problems, you need to know exactly what works when.

You really may be better off calling in a pro to connect it correctly, since he may need to trace the wiring and see which wire is controlling what. Good time he can do a service inspection or cleaning to check it all out now that you just bought it.
