I just bought a home that has a single sink in the kitchen. I replaced the existing faucet with an new one. The old setup had the sprayer all together with the faucet and the hole where the new sprayer needs to go has some rounded cap that is connected to the side of the garbage disposal under the sink. The new faucet's sprayer needs to mount where the rounded part is. What is the rounded part that hooks to the disposal? And how can I remove it? The back of the sink has 4 holes, the new faucet uses 3 and the sprayer needs to use the 4th.

That round thing is an air gap for the dishwasher. It prevents water from the sink drain from going into the dish washer.

Some local plumbing codes require an air gap, some permit a "high loop" in the dishwasher drain hose. Some plumbers prefer the "high loop" over the air gap.

It can be removed if you do the "high loop", that is attach the dishwasher hose to the underside of the countertop, and then back down to the disposal.

Ok, I was confused because it hooks into the side of the disposal. I also am having a hard time removing it from the sink. It looks like there is a plastic nut but at the bottom it flares out into two pipes so I am not sure how the nut comes off. Thank you very much

Here is a fast drawing

Pull the chrome cap off, remove the nut and take air gap out from bottom. Remove air gap and hose to disposal. Connect hose from dish washer to disposal, attaching up to underside of sink as shown. May have to get longer hose. May have to get adapter to make hose fit disposal.

Yes, in fact I have lived in Woodbridge and still own home there. Wouldn't worry about PW code.

To add a bit to all this. If your concerned about installing a high loop, (you may have to purchase a new hose to do this,) let me put your fears to rest.
In the 5 years the Plumbing Page has been on the net we haven't got even one complaint about a high loop failing to do its job. However, Counter Top Air Gaps are arother story. Plenty of problems with them. Remove the Air Gap and Install your new faucet with the sprayer. Good luck, tom

Thanks guys for the help. I am in the middle of a kitchen remodel and the new dishwasher is sitting in the garage so at the moment I don't have a dw hooked up. One thing I just thought of, where does the hose the high loop hose hook to the dw?

The hose should already be connected in the rear of the dishwasher. If you're asking where to connect to a disposal unit it has a port on the side the hose connects to with a hose clamp.(see image) Note: This port has a knockout plug that must be removed before the hose can be connected

afaroo, that picture made everything clear. I didn't have my dishwasher installed so I the air gap only had the hose going to the disposal. Now I see the whole picture. Thanks!

Wait a minute we all were asuming that you have a DW, but say no DW it is very simple you don't need aa Air gap or istall high loop, if the small rubber hose is connect to Garbage disposal and the plug in GD is removed you need to plug the end of the hose some other wise there will be a miss inside cabnet, Good Luck.

Install a high loop on the DW and a sprayer in the old air gap opening. Good luck, Tom

Ok, small problem. How in the world do you get the air gap out? I loosened the plastic nut from under the sink but it only unscrews so far due to the bottom of the pipe y'ing out. It won't pull out from the top or bottom? Do I have to cut it in half or something?
