He should try some of the larger companies. How long ago was the conviction? If it was at least 5 years ago and he has a good driving record, he should be given at least a second look. You have to remember that the trucking company is not the one who has the final say about who they hire - it is their insurance company who has the final say. Good driving records go a long way. Also, I am surprised that the school did not recommend certain companies to him rather than just take his money with no prospective companies lined up for him as drivers are in great demand now. He just needs to keep applying to companies. He will probably be accepted for an over the road job before he would be able to get a local job where he would be home every night, so prepare for the over the road home once a month stuff for a few years.

And I will recommend the other way, some of the smaller firms that pay lower, not as many benefits that have a harder time keeping people.
Also tow truck companies, dump truck and cement truck drivers.

I have an emaculate driving record also 6 yrs Navy and have had a CDL for three yrs now. Its hard to find a truck driving job believe it or not. For the first time I agree with fr chuck, either you pick a very large trucking company or one where they work the back out of you. However, the local small companies that work you hard physically only allow you to drive straight trucks not tractor trailer. You will be lucky to make 12hr. Why is he not driving for the company that he got his license with? Driving commercially with a straight truck has zero creditability for your truck driving career. Most companies driving tractor trailor locally will not even touch you (the insurance companies wont) without at least 1 yr over the road. I am actually going back over the road myself next week. Now that prices are high companies are strict on who they hire- a lot of them are going out of business. Lately its been a tough market. There is one company I can think of that will hire a felon (depending on the felony) most companies that do hire felons only after 9 yrs. DWI five yrs and only one dwi in a life time. Call CR England. Maybe Prime inc. Swift.
