Financial assistance for much needed repairs
My husband abandoned me 4.5 years ago, leaving me to handle everything alone. I'm not the first to be left up the river with a broken paddle. My sole source of spurt is my SSD which is only 800 per month, mortgage is 598. I need to find an agency in my area that will Fix things like: my roof (it leaks), my basement (gets drain water every time it rains), my doors ( he kicked two of them in and by myself I put them back as best I could. I try so hard to be self sufficient, nut in my present condition 56 years old, 5 spinal fusions, 6 pinched nerves, pins and screws in my right foot and a new event of a nerve impingment on my left foot that keeps my toes numb. It is getting to be a reality that I have hated facing, besides being alone in Martinsville, VA, I just cannot do today the things I did 29 years ago:rolleyes:
I have written to some places that give personal grants and housing grants but I fer the snow will be here before I can actually hear from anyone. If anyone has a contact name and address to any agency, group, or person benefactor; I would really appreciate any direction you can send me.
I have never had to search for help for so many facets and I am kind of embarrassed, but pride took the Concorde and I'm screaming for help now.

Try contacting local churches or religious origanization. Many participate in what use to be called "Christmas in April". Now called something else. It is a program of volunteers doing home repair for needy individuals.

Yes, contacting churches or other religious organizations is an excellent idea! You could also look for a handyman in your area. Some handymen don't charge all that much. Some of them might even be willing to give you a break in the price. I do that on many occasions in order to help someone out. Please click on the following search.

There are also social service organizations that might be able to help you.

Yes, while there is sometimes money in some depressed areas, and some times money for elderly. You woiuld need to check with local realitor to see if there was.

Have you looked into renting one of the rooms out for income to help with repairs

Also as noted check with various non profits, I know our church takes a couple houses a year and does some work on them for members.

I am in a very precarious situation here in Martinsville. I don't have a car and because of my eyes I wouldn't put others lives at risk by driving let alone the way my legs lock up sometimes. I am a new member to a church and I don't push my problems onto the congregation with a boat load of problems, besides the salvation of my soul (that's big enough I thought). I thought that someone might know how I can get in touch with organizations that did home renovations with government grants. I am in the process of applying for some grants but who knows when they will come. But my prayers have been answered for the glasses so I'll just keep praying and using the gifts God blessed me with to keep trying by writing everyone . Thanks to all of you who responded with very good ideas and I hope that you keep thinking of me and maybe come up with a plan. Again my thanks to you all and MAY GOD BLESS YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO THINK OF ME!

Still looking for help to fix my house. I would probably be better off going to a cnstruction site and dance on the roof of a car, maybe then one of the workers will feel sorry for me (after he got up off the ground from laughing). My grant search turned into a nightmare but I have not lost faith in God. The roof is leaking very badly in the kitchen right over the fridge, so I don't spend a lot of time surveying the food in the fridge. Don't want it to cave in while I'm stuffing my face. (smile)
