The volume setting icon has disappeared from the taskbar on my desktop.
What is the best/easiest way to get it back?

Do you still have sound on your system and it's simply the icon missing, or has the sound gone as well ?
Also what operating system is this for.

Assuming that you use windows XP, go to Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices. On the Device Volume, check Place volume icon in the taskbar. I hope this will help.
