We had a faucet leaking in the tub. Figured out it was the hot water, so we realized the washer was missing and replaced it. Then all of a sudden, the water wouldn't stop coming out at full pressure. We tried to take the washer off to see if that was the problem. Also tried switching the hot and cold (which works fine) nipples, and it still didn't work. Any solutions greatly appreciated as we have had to turn off all water to the house to get it to stop.

You swapped the hot and cold stem and washer assemblies? Did you check the seat for nicks of rough spots before you replaced the washer? What's the brand name of your valve? Cheers, Tom

Try this. Remove the stem one more time. Inspect the washer to insure that the washer has not been damaged. Hold the bonnet nut and turn the stem to the open position and reinstall. Faucet stems should be installed in the open position.

No washer makes me wonder where the old washer is. It may be in there someplace. Also, where's the retaining screw? Just a thought.

Thanks for all the quick responses. The retainer screw was there, but there was no washer (we looked at the one on the cold side to compare). It looks like the issue is the part the stem goes into (is that the seat?). It might be stripped? Can you replace that part or am I looking at something major?

So my friend came over who has way more knowledge than I and he had to replace the pipes that connect to the knobs and shower. He said that because it's an old house (built in 1949), the connection to the hot water knob had just worn away from use. Thanks for all of your ideas - they helped me point him in the right direction!
