The "O" rings are stiff making all cartridge hard to pull out. You can do one of 2 things:
1. Screw original screw ( the one that holds handle on cartridge ) back onto the tip of the cartridge. Take 12" Channel Locks, grip it tight - and pull on it.
2. Go to Home Depot. They sell a tool designed to remove "frozen" Moen cartridges. It costs around $15.00.
Let us know how you did... Good Luck !

Installation Help / Animated Tutorial - Installing the Moen 1225 / 1200 Cartridge
Moen shower cartridges are held in place by a clip on top of the valve. When looking straight in at the valve stem the clip will look like a very smll rod runnning left to right around the outter top surface of the valve body, stick a very small screw driver below the rod and pry down. The clip will lift and then you grab it with a needle nose pyler. The cartridge may still not want to come out so Milo's step 1 and 2 may still be needed but nothing will budge until you remove the clip.
ballengerb1: I think he said he removed the clip ("pin")
Milo, duh, my bad! I apparently missed the forest because of the trees. You are right, the O rings are swollen and crudded up.
And they look like this. Good luck, TomQuote:
