How do I perminantly delete items (files) to give my computer more memory space? In the process of defraging my system, but after deleting a lot of files, I still seem to have the same amount to defrag after that. What's my next plan of attack?

FYI, defrag does not increase memory nor significanty increase disk space.

Also, you can only defrag so much.

Are you looking to increase memory? You have to physically add memory modules.

Are you looking to increase hard drive space? You can compress files, add a second hard drive, use an external firewire (IEEE1394) hardrive, or a USB "thumb" drive depending on your needs.

As mentioned, are you trying to free up disk space or speed up your PC

Looking to make it run better. I have an e machines T3508-if that helps.
It won't let me do a complete system recovery to make the computer as to when I purchased it new. I don't get it, then when I do go to the system restore-it has selected dates as to when I can go back to, when I try to click on a previous date or month there is nothing available to highlight and go to.
Another thing the PC is telling me is to do a MacFee virus scan, but I've done that and nothing showed up.
I could use some help here with how to do either virus scan or the full system restore.

-Now a system restore only goes back to a previous date, as you attempted to do.

If there are dates that you can not click on to restore to, that means there is no backup for that particulart date.

The only dates you can go back to are the ones that it will allow you to go back to.

-A system recovery is when you go back to the way it was when you first bought it.

So, you can choose to go back to a date it will let you or you can do a system recovery back to factory settings. You would need your recovery disks that came with computer to do the recovery.

Not being familiar with your machine, see if you have your manuals/disks or what you would need to recover your system back to new.

You would have received disks or the recovery software is on a hidden drive on your computer.

Also, When you start your computer, check to see what options you have when starting. Such as, Hit F2 for, Hit F12 for and so on.

I actually did figure out the system recovery.
I read the manual-go figure?
So, I restored it to full factory settings with a c-drive back up of a few files.

Now that I am back to my factory settings, what can I do to the system to make sure it runs smoothly?
I know someone mentioned to go to Start-Run and something with %something something%. -I guess that helped regulate a few things, but I am not too sure. Another person mentioned going to Start-Run and input another word to regulate what will run when I turn the system on.
-----Can you all help out with that?

I assume you are using XP.

Not being familiar with your computer using habits, there are a couple of things to start with.

Go to start and run then type msconfig, hit enter
-go to the startup tab and you will see programs that start every time you restart your PC
Go down the list there and if you see something you know you don't need started all the time, uncheck that item. (If not sure, you can leave it or Google the file name and you will find out what it is used for)

Here are a couple of links to check out and consider if these are some tweaks you would like to use. The first link will speed up things a bit for you. Again, it is all user preference.

This link has other tips of helping performance, tip 5 will help speed things up to and will not affect your functionality of system

You should defrag your drive 1 time a month or so while sleeping as it does take some time, is up to user

I personally would not mess with step 1 in link above (Paging file) Leave that as it is.

Windows Defender is a good downlaod from Microsoft's website. It has an option in there that will let you disable startup programs too. Windows Defender is good utility in general and I think you will find it very useful.

Always helping and Seahawk83, you two have been the computers for dummies---- to me. I just got done disabeling the visual effects to speed up my XP, plus the other link really helped out too.

What about the other option in the step 5 process to speed up the computer.
I go to My Documents, right click the C-drive and then go to properties.

-What about clicking on the compress drive to save disc space option?

Only as a "Last" option if you "Really" need to get more drive space.

It would be beneficial just to get another drive to add to your system

Drive space will compress data to 'squeeze' more dirve space which in theory may slow your computer down as data in compressed and to get to this data, your system would have to uncompress data to get to it.

It is not a system optimizer, it just gets you more hard drive space, and the amount of how much is all relevant to the user.

As mentioned, to purchase an additional drive would be the route to go - For peace of mind and computer performance.

More chance of a compressed drive getting corrupt than not


But the bottom line is, it is up to User Preference
