I want to resurface the doors and doorframes in my home. The doors and doorframes are now stained. I was told to use liquid sandpaper on the wood, then prime the frames before I paint. I am concerned about using the liquid sandpaper because it is flammable and is very toxic. Is there another product comparable to liquid sandpaper that is not so toxic and easy to use?

I can't remember the name right now, but there is a liquis paint remover that isn't so toxic. But make sure you cover the floors well and tape it down.

I don't see why you couldn't just use regular sandpaper, just need to get the old shiney poly coating off then your ready to prime.

True about the sanding, except it's very difficult to sand out all the creases and corners that would be in door frames. Unless maybe with a Dremel <G>

Take the door down, take the hardware off, take it outside. Strip with paint stripper, neutralize then sand with 100 grit to bare wood. You have to get all of the finish material off or the wood will not take the new stain. Sand to 120 or 150 grit. Unless you have some unique door casing pull it off and throw away. It isn't worth the work to strip. Strip and sand door frame. Replace casing, sand new casing to same grit as door and frame. Stain and finish.

From the post I thought the doors were going to be painted, if you are re-staining than hkstrouds advice is good, need to go to bare wood everywhere. If painting, it is not necessary, you can prime over the old stain once you get most of the shiney poly layer off.
