I'm trying to start up a small home based business (tile and concrete cleaning) and do not qualify for typical credit based loans and currently do not have equity or collateral for the funding and I'm new to the idea of running my own business. Does anyone know of any ways to receive (if any) funding or assistance with start up cost for small business development:
I have been in the janitorial business for over 25 years and one thing I do know Is; you first better learn the basics of business if you are to have any chance of success. Take some local courses at a Jr College or Chamber Classes, something to at least teach you the five basic principals of business: Planning, Organizing,Staffing, Directing and Controlling. Yes, when you start you may not have employees or big business ideas but all of these principals still apply, even if you only hire your wife believe me.
So with that and moving forward here; I suggest that you sit sown and total all your immediate costs, equipment, labor, supplies, insurance (yes absolutely; Liability), vehicles, gas, etc. Then you will have some idea of the "immediate" start up funding necessary. Many make the mistake of wanting to start BIG or even moderately.
You may find that you really do not need a lot of funding... WHY go into debt if you do not have to??
In the beginning I actually turned down some jobs because I couldn't handle them professionally and fund them properly without gambling everything.
I suggest that:
1. If you have no experience in this field---get some quickly before you start your own business. Go to work for a company that does this for awhile, learn the ins and outs of it, no better way sir. I started as a salesman first and eventually was V.P. of Sales and Marketing before I started my own company. And presently we service about $9M /year.
2. Start up small, get together only the money you need for the minimum amount of equipment and supplies. Do this and grow slowly, build a strong foundation in your business, build references from providing the very best "tile and concrete cleaning" in your neck of the woods. Treat you clients very well, be polite (always), on time, in budget, And I mean AND... always say "thank you" even if they complain about something. Because you WANT to learn to do it better than anyone.
Sorry if I gave you more advice than you requested. I have been in business and successfully for many years and I have learned quite a lot. Actually, believe it or not people pay to hear my talk about these matters. But I enjoy helping people with the guts to start a business and I am proud of you. BUT... do it the right way and be around a long time

I know how to use the correct words in advertising so that you will beat all of the rest of the competition in the locations where you are wanting to work. This is for real!

Perhaps there is something else that you could do for a business in order to save enough money up to get the tools and materials that you need for the business that you really want to do? You might also be able to borrow the equipment until you can get your own?
Just a couple of suggestions above.
I do a lot of things for a living. But, if I list everything that I do here, then it might seem that I am advertising, and then I would probably have to delete my own post since I am the moderator for this topic area!
What other skills and interests do you have, please? If you go to my profile, you will see some of the ways that I make a living for myself. Almost everything that I list as being what I have experience at doing and presently do are ways that I make money.
I would also appreciate knowing if you would like to know how to advertise on the Internet without it costing you anything. I had already indicated that to you in post #4 above.
Here's an example of starting a business, at least for the short run. Recently, we had really bad storms in our area. Many, many trees were knocked down. Branches all over the place. Some of the winds were in excess of 100 mph! I would imagine that Stringer has heard about it since he's not very far away from me.
In order to capitalize on the opportunity to make some money, and since I'm already insured to be a handyman, I borrowed three chain saws from different people that I know and have been making really good money because people are needing tree cutting services all over the place.
Starting your own business might not have to cost you much money at all...
It's good to make connections with people so that you might be able to borrow the things that you need for a short while.
Has any one got a draft of a company profile letter, I run a small company which I'd like to expand slowly
