    Earwax buildup in dogs

My dog is a minituare rat terrier and I noticed with in the last month that he has a lot of wax in his right ear. He is always scratching it too. No one in my family thinks that its anything to be concerned about but I think it is. His ear also has an odor too.

Yes it is something to be concerned about. You need to clean them out. You can keep pouring peroxide in them to loosen it up but you need to be careful removing the wax once it is softened so that you do not puncture the ear drum.

He needs to be seen by a vet. The odor indicates an ear infection as well as the ear dirt.

There is an ear cleaner available at the vet. You stick a cotton ball in the dog's ear and squirt this stuff in then massage the ear and pull the cotton out. My dog's have stinky ears, too. I would check to make sure there is no infection, get the stuff while you're at the vet and clean them once a week. The vet stuff has the right Ph for dogs - peroxide might be too strong.

My brother just took his dog in yesterday, he had an ear infection and they gave him the medicine(cleaner). I would advise you not to wait. My cousin's dog had an ear infection and kept shaking his head. Eventually his ear became very swollen and they had to pay 300 and some for an operation.
