First its not a good idea to piggyback your question on someone else's. This can lead to confusion. You should start a new thread. So I've moved your question to its own thread.
Second, did you read the responses in the thread where you originally posted?
Very simple answer -
Virginia is a conditional gift state - the engagement ring is a conditional gift, and if the condition is not met (marriage) the ring is returned without regard to who was at fault.

Answer "you must return it" was posted a little while after I posted the law. She's right. In Virginia it goes back.
