    Accident on private property
First, sorry if this is in the wrong spot!

Ok, so some months back I backed into someone on a private parking lot. My fault I was totally willing to pay for the damage (it wasn't that big so I figured couple hundred probably at most).

Well the guy calls police and he comes out. They happen to be neighbors. The cop is nice, he tells me I am at fault but no ticket will be issued (provate property, of course not). He gets our info to streamline things I suppose. He tells me he will fill stuff out and I can pick up the filled out paer later. Well I pick it up and he ends up "finding" me and tells me he wasn't done. I say OK and give it back to him. I never got phone number for the other guy or anything. The cop went to my work place so he knows where I work. After that I didn't hear anything. I thought I would be contacted and maybe receive the bill or something. That never happened and it honestly slipped my mind. Well the other day the guy drives by and ses me. His friend who was with him at the time of the accident makes a big fuss saying I didn't pay him etc etc. I told him the cop had my info and I never heard anything and I don't want any problems. I asked if he had my number. The guy whose car I hit never wanted to talk to me then or even at the accident and he said he would talk to the cop. I haven't heard anything.

I don't know how to deal with these isues. I thought I would get a bill or something saying how much damge it was and if it looked reasonable I would just pay it and if not then I would sek some kind of legal assistance.

I never reported this to the insurance company because I thought I was just going to get a bill and be done with it.

I don't want any problems. What should I do?

    Thank you.

Nothing on a car now days can be fixed for a couple hundred.

If you have insurance, you should report this incident to them.

It is their responsibility to represent you in this situation, that is what you pay the premium for.

I can assure you that if and when this person gives you the bill, you are not going to like the total.

Will it be a problem since it happened a while ago? And since I don't actually know the person. Should I just tell them basically what I said happened (without the extra "story" of course)

Depending on what a "while ago" is, they may give you a hard time for not reporting it, but, if your insurance was valid at the time of the incident, unless there is a law or statute where you live, regarding the time limit to report a claim, they would have to cover your liability for the damage.

I think it was mid February. So yes it was a while ago, which is why it really slipped my mind when I hadn't heard anything. I was insured with my current company at the time. They deduct directly from my bank account so there has ben no slip.

I think you should report it, explain to them the way you explained the situation here, and let them get to work on the claim.

Then, you can quit worrying about it so much, after all, you have paid for the coverage.

Yes, definitely report this to your insurance company just in case this guy decides to tack on some swell personal injuries to the bill. You never know about people these days what they are capable of doing to another person. Next accident (I hope not too soon) please report this to your insurance company immediately. Trying to take care of a problem like this on your own can prove to be extremely expensive...

I would first get a copy of the police report, then report it to your insurance company. If they make a claim against your insurance fine, if they send you a bill, then you can decide to pay it or submit it to your carrier.
