I was just wondering what kind of trouble your employer would get into if he was stealing time from you. I'm a mechanic and I'm scheduled 40 hrs a week, yet I work about 6 hrs a week more than that (I'm paid hourly, not flat rate). We have to punch in and out and I'm sure my boss can change it on me. I leave late every day. Also is there any right as far as cleaning up at the end of your shift. I washed up and went to punch out yesterday and got in trouble.

If you punch in and out how is he changing your time? If you think he is, keep your own records in addition to punching in and out, including what you were working on and what time.

He can require you to work the 40 hours and clean up after the work day. He does not have to pay you time while you clean up.

The reverse is true - In general I expect my employees to be ready to work at 9AM, I expect them to work until 5PM, I don't expect them to get ready for lunch 15 minutes before lunch starts and then prepare to go back to work for 15 minutes after lunch. It's inclusive.

Well first if you are suppose to punch out at 5 pm, you have to punch out at five, you stop soon enough to wash your hands to be at the clock at 5,

If your boss ok's your overtime, then you can work late, but if you do not have permission to work late you can get into trouble for that

Now if you have permission to work late, they will have to pay you for your time.
