How to replace iron cleanout in floor with flush PVC one I won't trip on?
    Hi experts.

There's an iron cleanout (4") in the floor of my favorite person's space that needs to go away. I'm thinking I can chip it out, cut it with a grinder, chip away at the concrete around it, put in a rubber connector, and install a new, flush-to-floor plastic cleanout. Is this the easiest thing to do?

Any suggestions? I don't want her to trip on this thing and bruise her perfect person. Thanks!

    Hey HT:

Is this your house? How high above the floor is the cleanout? They make FLUSH cleanout plugs that don't have the raised hex head... maybe that will help here (available at plumber's supply house... bring old one with you).

Otherwise, you may be able to do what you are suggesting.. but you may not be able to do it, too... ok?

If this is really important enough to investigate then I would have you break away the concrete from around the cleanout and see what type of fitting is in place BELOW the cleanout.

Here, if cleanout is installed in the HUB of a 4" cast iron 45 degree fitting and that fitting is installed into the hub of a 4" wye fitting then it will probably not be possible for you to do what you propose. There won't be enough room to cut fitting and install clamp and new cleanout without cleanout sticking out of the ground, and of course that is what you are trying to eliminate.

If there is room between the 4" fitting and the pipe below then you may be able to cut the pipe with a grinder and diamond blade, install a shielded clamp or a 4 band clamp (see pictures) and a flush cleanout like you suggested... but will be a lot of work!

You sure you can't just put a piece of furniture over this cleanout? How about building a box over it, blend it in like a book shelf or something... just some thoughts...

Let me know what you think...

Here's what Mark was talking about,(see image) If all you trip over is the raised hex this is your solution. Hope this helps, Tom
