I am remodeling my bathroom and as I was bringing up the tile, a piece of the cement slab came up with it. (this bathroom is on the second floor. I started to remove the cement and noticed that the beams in the floor do not have a square top, they are notched so that there is no flat surface to put plywood onto. Should I remove all the cement and then try to match up some additional joists or should I try to fix the cement slab. There are some hairline fractures in the cement now. Any help would be great

Are you saying that there is no plywood subfloor?

Not at all there is some kind of stone dust in between the joists and about 3 inches of cement over that

Can't imagine that kind of construction. Can you post a pic. What holds the stone dust up?

There is some wood between the beems holding it up. I will take pictures in the morning and post. The house was built in the 1930's. I appreciate your help!
