Hello everyone,

I am an adult over the age of 18. I have a few questions regarding child support. My mother has never went to court to ask for child support from my father. When I was born, he came to see me once in the hospital, which of course I don't remember, but I have yet to see him. He has never attempted to pay child support and my mom has never tried to enforce it niether. I have tried on occasion to speak with him but he has denied my existence through 3rd parties. I do know that he was in the Army and he has since remarried. Is there anything that we can do? I think that it is beyong horrible that my mother had to take care of me with absoulutey no help from him. I'm sure this is a long shot but I still had to ask. If anyone can assist me at all, then I would truly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Why did your mother not take him for child support? Usually, not always, but usually if you want a man to pay the proper amt. of support, or any support at all, you have to have a judge look at him and tell him to do so. And at this point in time, I don't know that you can get support from him. Maybe some states have different laws regarding this issue but as far as I know because you are over 18, it's too late.

I really didn't think we'd be able to do anything. And it wasn't even about the money. My mom was probably just too proud and he was just trifiling. But it really is the kids who end up being hurt by their mistakes whether they want to admit to it or not. But I do believe that I will take a little vacation and go and find him. I have 3 other sisters and brothers that I'd like to meet.

My b/f had some problems w/ his father. He did know him, though so his story is a little different. At the same time some things had taken place and 11 years went by w/ not so much as a word from his father. We had a child of our own and I guess it really got him thinking about his dad. He wrote him a letter. A week later his dad had wrote him back w/ this unbelievable letter. You could feel it when he said that he was sorry. Maybe, just maybe you'll get the same reaction from him. I hope that you do. The years that go by will never take away your hurt, but maybe the years at least made him a little bit wiser and more compassionate. I hope the best for you! This is a legal issue, not a parenting issue so I've moved it to the Family Law forum.

You are over 18. The purpose of child support is to help raise the child. The child, you in this case, has been raised. So neither you nor your mother can seek redress at this time.

Have you discussed with your mother why she never pursued child support?

You mother may, for a long shot, may file for some past support if you are not too far over 18, ( statue of limitation issues to collect)

As the child you have no rights to do anything, you can not even force him to talk to you.
