The U.S. Dept. Of Transportation (D.O.T.) law says passenger car tires have to have a minimum tread of 3/32 of an inch. I am a used dealer in Illinois, we have no state law but
You can get a ticket for this, usually by a state trooper. It is a federal law that all used cars have a buyers guide in the window marked as-is or warranty. If a car is marked as-is it is the buyers responsibility to inspect the car before purchase and negotiate with the dealer if it needs something. Tires are usually not a warranty item but I personally do not sell cars with worn tires. BUYER BEWARE!
