    Insurance is tapped out
My mother's insurance will not pay for anything else. What now? She is currently recovering from Septic shock after having breast reduction surgery. Her knee replacement also became infected and was removed to clear infection. She is on IV antibiotics ($6000). The Hospital wants her gone and is pressuring me to take her after the insurance company turned her down for in-house rehab. She has to have intensive rehab--she needs medical equipment, medication and still another surgery. I am fine with her coming here and caring for her, but right now she is way too sick and immobile for me to care for. Does anyone know what I can do? I have to help her and I just don't know even where to start. The social worker and case manager at the hospital are telling me that they see no options besides me but that they will keep looking. I got a feeling that there is something else that can be done and that they are just trying to make me their 'point person' for their discharge plan.

I ve seen this happen before, but as you say she needs a lot more help before she is ready for home care, it's usually down to... we need the bed.

I think you have to stand your ground Shannon, after all you have your mum's best interests at heart.

Lets face it what are they going to do if you refuse ( for good valid reasons ) they are hardly going to put her out on the street, they would have come across cases like this before and dealt with it one way or another, so don't feel pressured into taking responsibility when you obviously know you cannot cope the way things are, if you do eventually the pressure will upset you and reflect upon your mum, which you want to avoid, for her good recoveryl

I think you have to put your position clearly and precisely, explaining that ,this is your mum, and yes of course you will care for her, that goes without question, but at the moment she is way to ill for you to cope with.

They will have to continue to care for your mum... after all that is their job... if there's a bill at the end of it, well... so be it,cross that bridge when you come to it,at the moment the priority is your mums medical care and welfare.

All this worry cannot be doing either of you any good.

It might be useful to enquire why the insurrance has stopped. Was it down to the kind of policy that she holds or is it a case of she's used her money limit.. read the small print on the policy just to see if everything is as it should be.

Social workers and the hospitals will always look for the easy option... family, but if you state your case then they will have to look else where... what about people who have no family!!

I hope this helps a little

By maxed out, do you mean she has reached annual maximums? If the ongoing care is a result of doctor's mistakes, then have you talked to an attorney?
