Hi everyone,

(This is my very first post on this wonderful forum, and when it comes to fixing things around the house, I'm a novice at best!)

Anyway, I'm trying to replace my old shower diverter. However, I don't know how to remove this metal tube (see attached picture) that goes around the stem. Please let me know what I should do. Thanks a lot.

That looks like a escushion (sp) the decorative flange that screws into on on the valve stem. Try wd 40 and turning it ccw with a wrench. If you really want leverage and don't care about ruining it, drill a hole in 2 places thick enough for a screw driver (leaving room to clear the stem) and then use a screwdriver to torque it out.

That stem cover or sleave should just pull off or screw off. Either way it should be only hand tight. If you have to use pliers to turn be sure to be behind the area covered by escutcheon. Can't really tell from pic but the far end does not look round, meaning that it probably just pulls off.

That chrome tube has threads. Hit the base with some WD 40, let it set and work in and then simply unscrew it. Good luck, Tom

Thanks, Tom. That's exactly what I did following absolutelastsn's and hkstroud's advices. I've never done this before so I was a little unsure of what to do.

I just finished replacing the diverter and it works like it should. What a great feeling. I am going to replace the hot and cold handlers tomorrow. Thanks to all of you for helping me.
