Sounds like you need to take it to a transmission shop. Your transmission is slipping.

The Transmission Range (TR) Sensor, mounted on the transaxle, senses the position of the gear selector chosen by the driver. It contains a series of resistors and switch contacts and provides inputs to the PCM. The PCM can detect sensor problems and set trouble codes to indicate specific faults. The TR Sensor may need replacing or the control linkage needs adjusting. Check the TR Sensor's connector for looseness and damaged terminals or wires. It's best to take it to Ford for evaluation/repair.

Be sure to drop and clean the pan, replace the fluid (Mercon V), and change the transmission filter every 30,000 miles. I recommend that you use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, which I use in my 2000 Taurus.
