    Anal Gland Problem
I have an Eglish BullDog. Approximately 2 months ago we started to smell an odor coming from my dogs anal area. At first we thought it was just a bathing thing. Washing her every week did not cure the problem. Brought her to the Vet. He stated that it was her anal glands and that as long as they were draining it was a good thing. He also stated that it could last 1 to 3 months and that it should go away but it might always come back.

Presently it does not seem to be going away in the smell just lingers in the house and on everything she lays on. It has now been (4) months. What can I do?

From what I have read this seems to be a common problem for bulldog, especially if they are overweight. My boyfriend's had a dog that was a poodle-mix and he had to get her glands expressed once-a-month. Normally the gland are emptied when the dog goes to the bathroom but leakage can occur if they get over-excited or upset. Some say a diet high in fiber can help with leakage, also baby wipes can be of great use. You need to figure out whether irritation is being caused by overactive glands, infection, or allergies. If the glands are overactive and you don't want to pay to have the vet drain them on a regular basis- you can learn to do it yourself. I have also heard that it is possible to have the glands removed.

    Hi,
You could also see a different Vet, one that would explain to you what to do if it continues. Surgery can be performed. Best of luck.
