    Getting felony expunged
My felony will be getting expunged once I get off probation (6 months after probation to be exact) in about a year now. I'm stuck doing labor work now but I would like to be a fireman. I'm thinking they won't except me with a felony on my record so how long should I wait until I even apply? My friend said they didn't except him until about 2 years. I was thinking about applying in 6 months and by the time they contact me my felony will be expunged.

Your felony won't be automatically expunged, so I am assuming you have filed the application already or spoken to/hired an attorney. You can check your own criminal record by filling out an application, and paying a fee to the Bureau of Criminal Identification. This is likely the same place that you will find information and the application to expunge your felony. Before you apply to be a fireman, I would verify your record is clean.

If you haven't applied for expungement yet, here are a few common rules:

Only a first time felony can be expunged. If you have two or more numbers, they will stay with you for life.

Rules of expungement are highly state/crime specific. Every state has it's own guidelines on what is allowed and what is not.

Time elements apply. Most states demand 5 years free and clear of all legal encumbrances.

I extracted these general rules from this site (click).

Am surprised that you could get a felony expunged shortly after getting off probation. Usually the wait is more like 9 or 10 years and no additional charges incurred. I'd check with your attorney again about such a short time frame for this as it does not sound right to me.

    Hello Mr,

Even if your felony IS expunged, it's only hidden from public view. The fire department ISN'T the public and they'll be able to SEE your record.

I am not really sure about the legal part of your expungement but I do know that many fire departments will not hire or even allow someone with a felony to work at their dept. I love in Ga and I believe there is like 1 in the whole state that will except a felon.
