Hi Janae:
I don't think you can repair this really unless you see threads on the rod then should just screw back on... OR, you could try propping the diverter up with a tool and then try some liquid epoxy and try to join the two parts to each other.. but best overall will only be a temporary fix!
Instead I would recommend that you change the entire tub spout diverter assembly. These are not usually very expensive (10-20 dollars) and are usually real easy to swap out. Thing is you need to determine which one you have at your house...
There are basically two kinds of tub spouts with diverters... the threaded kind and the slip on kind (see pictures below). The slip on type spout is missing the diverter in this picture but presents the idea for you to see it.
For the slip on kind you would find a small slot on the underside of the spout. An allen wrench sets up and into this slot to find an allen screw that holds the spout in place. If this is your type, should just need to loosen that screw and then pull/twist the old one off and replace it with a new one. Purchase a little silicone GREASE to lubricate the new oring just prior to installing it so new oring doesn't bind and break.. ok?
For the threaded kind you would need to unscrew the spout counterclockwise and remove the spout. Then off to home depot or Lowe's for an exact replacement. You should also purchase a little teflon tape or some pipe dope to apply to the threads of the pipe just before screwing new spout on.
It should be that easy... there are a few kinds out there so just bring the old one with you to find best replacement. A universal fit will work best!
Let us know if you need more...
