    Reversed polarity
Is reversed polarity when the hot and neutral are wired backwards

That could be what someone means but it is not technically correct. A/C is both positive and negative. It cycles positive and negative. That's what alternating current means means. Polarity refers more to direct current. If it is wired backwards, the hot on the neutral side, its just wired wrong.

On AC testers, when it says reversed polarity, it means hot and neutral reversed, or possibly an open neutral on a multicircuit. Reversing wire will not make a motor go backwards.
On DC voltage, if polarity is reversed, it means the + is connected to the minus, and the -
Is hooked to the positive. This will make a DC motor change direction, Most Motors.

Aaron2772, looks like a test question, fire for testing a gas leak might be a wild guess?
