Does anyone recognize the man in this painting, or the artist who drew the painting ?

Can u get a photo that is not (so) blurred, and a second one, showing a detail-close-up of the part starting from the underlipp, down to the 2nd row of the buttons and wide, from the head ad 2 inch on each side. Is there any signature, nubers, letters, any sign... maybe on the back? Is it oil on canvas? How is the reverse looking?

Is it a print, or was it fit into a larger frame - I can see a gap between the painting-rim and the frame (by the way, a very nice frame). Could be an official (mariner?) maybe british or american, from 19 cent? But that's all speculation so far, we need to get a clear view of the pic first :)

So here are a couple of more photos I took. Sorry I'm neither a photographer or an art expert so the photos don't look great but perhaps you can get a better idea from these. If you need more photos please tell me and I'll get someone to help me out. With regards to a signature I believe it may have one hidden under the frame, however I don't want to meddle around with it. I believe perhaps a persian craftsmen made the frame for the painting but again I can't be sure

The second of the new photos is much better, but please, if you use a flash, don't star directly in front of the painting, make it a bit more from the side to avoid the mirror-effect of the flash.

If the signatur is under the frame, its OK, not necessery and I doubt it will be under the frame. So looks like oil on canvas. Is there any mark, stamp, initials etc on the back (I mean not on the gilded frame)?

Tell a bit, where you got it from, or where you are, or where you think it might be from? (thats about also the questions in an auction-house to get better informations about the "social & national-cultural" enviroment).

The picture024 is the best so far, I would need even more detailed pics like that, but only if they have the same quality like that one. Fine if it would show the lowest part of the painting with the transition to the frame, the whole face, and one that is like the first one, but in a quality like the 024 photo -

By the way, what are the measures of the pic? Is that guy life-size?

The painting belonged to my grandfather, he received this painting from a patient about 50years ago. The patient bought this painting in an auction in France around the 1950's and gave it my grandfather as a present. I also believe its pretty much life size.

Great photo-quality now; the painting is a very good one, its mainly concentreded on the man`s face, but that is excellent. Its in the dutch & british portrait-tradition made; BUT I doubt, this is the original frame when the man got it in the auction, but that doesn't matter, the frame is not like mentioned before asian or so, its european, wooden, red prime & gold-coloured paint (its no gilded I guess), but never the less, the frame is great as well and is very pricy when you buy it. So, do not try to make any "restaurations" yourself, leave it the way it is.
... but before I tell more about it,. check the pic029 and look the red marked part - for me it looks like a signature or so and a date (1860?) - have a look at it in the original and let us know :)

Here is also the image of picture number 29 enlarged, lightened and sharpened some. Yes, it does look like there is some kind of scratch markings of a signature of some kind on the left and 1850 or 1860 does appear to be on the left of the signature. Using a magnifying glass might help with the examination of the signature area.

Here is also an image of the entire painting in case someone might come along who might recognize what it is right away. It is best to be posting the images on this site rather than links to another site if that can be avoided as some people will not be likely to read all of the text that has been written, but none-the-less, might be able to be very helpful in the identification of a work of art if the can readily see it right away. Doing that can help to avoid there being any confusion. When I first saw what was posted on this thread, I thought that it was an image of some kind of animal with shiny eyes!

Incredible, there is a signature exactly where you state with a date. And it seems your spot on with the date 1860. I can't really make out the signature. Here are some pictures for you, perhaps you can possibly identify the signature.

Great, I will go and check the close-ups with the signature a bit later, quite busy today. I know it hasn't much to do with the signature, but can u get us photo of the whole painting from the backside.
