I'm constructing a hearth pad with tile for a pellet stove. Is it necessary to use cement board?

I don't see why you would need backerboard, especially on concrete. If it is on other wood flooring, I would use it if I didn't have adequate floor thickness (as recommended by tile manufacturer), or if some additional height was needed.
