Travel expenses for property in foreign country
    Hello,
I have a property in my home country. I am alien resident in US. Can I claim expenses for visit to my home country to see my property?

    Thanks,

    Normally No.
Only if it is a business property, and your visit is only for business purpose.

If you are a resident alien (filing taxes just like a U.S. citizen) AND the property is a rental from which you realize rental income, then, yes, the costs of an annual visit to inspect your rental property CAN be deducted on Schedule E.

However, do NOT go overboard. You can deduct the airline ticket to and from and the expenses for a reasonable number of days to complete the visit to the rental property. Do NOT claim a month's worth of expenses unless you can show that you had to oversee extensive repairs and/or renovations to the property.
