You can certainly last a day with water alone - without the sugar. Are you talking about survival or weight loss?

A bit of both but the sugar idea was just for giving the body energy to do stuff (so not tired):)

Ooops sorry about putting that as your quote did not see the quick answer message box any way what I was talking about the sugar for giving the body energy to do stuff (not getting tired).

And it's abit of both for the topic survival and weight loss.

    Hi, Seeker,
One level teaspoon of sugar contains approx. 16 calories.
The normal person needs 2,000 calories a day to neither gain nor lose weight.
So, if you put, say 6 level teaspoons of sugar in an 8 0z. Glass of water, mix it up, and drink it, you will have taken in 96 calories; far below the 2,000.
You will lose weight over time, if you eat nothing, and only drink sugar water.
Sugar water is good for stamina, and products such as GatorAid contain other ingredients as well for stamina.
One can live many days on just sugar water.
Sometimes, when there is a very bad infection in the human body, and you have to go into a hospital, you will be hooked up to an IV, containing sugar water. Another IV will contain antibotics.
Patients normally lose some weight, can't eat anything, for say 10 days, until the bad infection is cured. I had this done many years ago, was hooked up to IV's with sugar water, for 11 days.

Sugar can slow down the absorption of water, as the body will try to dilute sugars in the gut. Your body has more than enough energy stored as fat, muscle to get you through a 2 day stint. Water, however, can become crucial in hostile environments.

Better to drink straight water or water with a little salt in it. Limit physical exercise to have the smallest amt of sweating possible (this is really important), move at night when its cooler.

*** this is an edit after the below comment was made: no. I'm not in competition (I'm guessing that is what you meant but couldn't spell) with fredg. Physiology is pretty straightforward. My post relates more about survival issues than short term energy needs. ***

Lol I know this is an old question. However I'll answer it anyway. I have been in several survival situations; therefore I have read many survival manuals and put their information to real-life situations.

Water is very important. Even doing nothing, the body will lose 2-3 liters of water a day. Any water that you lose from change in temperature, sweating, or eating will also be lost on top of the 2-3 liters you will already lose. Therefore it's important that you drink plenty of water.

However, in a survival situation, you can survive on just half of a liter of water a day. A daily intake of 500 cubic centimeter (0.5 liter) of a sugar-water mixture (2 teaspoons per liter) will suffice to prevent severe dehydration for at least a week, provided you keep water losses to a minimum by limiting activity and heat gain or loss.

Water is extremely important to the body both physically and mentally. And in a survival situation dehydration can be one of the most dangerous impairments. I hope your question was answered..

Depends on how many people to survive and how good you'll have it
An average person needs 2 litres of water a day, at minimum
If you don't have the luxury of 2 liters of water per person, or when you need more water because of the conditions your in, I hope you have a good will to survive
The will to live is stronger then the need of water
If its strong enough you can survive 1 week with no water
Unless you need to piss a lot or if you sweat a lot

If your using the term "survival" in the purest sense, then yes you could easily survive a day off 2 liters of sugar water... but then again, you can survive a day with nothing at all to eat or drink (unless under the most extreme heat in the desert maybe. A good rule is the rule of 3's... you can go 3 minutes without air, 3 hours in extreme weather (generally cold), 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food, and some add the 3 months without human contact rule in there. Now depending on the conditions these "rules" can vary a lot, What they are really meant to do, is get you to prioritize your survival needs, so that you don't panic on that first day lost in the woods and decide to hunt for food, just to end up freezing to death at night
