Sevin dust works wonders, just rub small amounts into the back of their heads, around the ears. Keep it away from their mouths and feet. It's available at all hardware and farm stores.
I just made a flea discovery that blows my mind. Vitamin E oil. You can buy it at any supermarket, it's totally natural, and not in any way harmful. Plus, it kills fleas on contact. I literally put some on my kitten this morning, because she has so many bites, and this evening I found maybe 6 fleas on her, where before I was finding 20 to 30 every few hours. It soothes her itching, too, so she doesn't scratch the crap out of herself. Just a few minutes ago, I saw a flea on her, and put a drop of oil on, and it was dead. Or, at least, it wasn't moving, and was easily removed, and flushed.
Those flea combs are great, too. The best way I've found is to stand over a sink, keep the water running, and comb the kitten over it; the fleas fall off the comb, and into the running water, and get washed away. It's important to pour something in after, though, like detergent or hand soap, other wise the little monsters will just hop right back out again.
