My paternal and maternal grandparents emigrated to the United States in the 50's from Holland. Perhaps I am just being naïve, but that does not by chance infer any sort of special status on me does it?

Were your parents or either one born in US? Holland did not allow dual citizenship except in case the person was born overseas to Dutch parent(s). If they emigrated with your grand parents, then nothing you can do.
