    Dark but not Heartless
    Missing Printer Software
My printer broke, and I found an old Lexmark Z35 series printer in my basement. I hooked it up, and all the cables are in the right places, and the paper feed works fine. But it won't connect to my computer. I tried disconnecting the old printer in the Printer Settings, but it doesn't recognize the new hardware.
I would think the only logical reason is that I need the installation software, but it's missing. Is there a way to get the software online? Or perhaps another way to get the printer to connect? Thanks.

Judy, Here's your link fixed: Freeware LEXMARK Printer Z35 Color Jetprinter at DirFile - Drivers > Printers

The site should be fine. The "download" link is hard to find on that page. It is here: DOWNLOAD Z35 Printer Driver

Dark, even without the software preinstalled, your computer should have responded in SOME way when you plugged in a USB printer. These devices telegraph their existence, it's the whole point of USB.

I would suggest you try another known working USB cable to make sure it's not the problem. If the cable is fine, then get ready to discover this printer is in the basement for a reason... like maybe it's broken?

I hope not, just reminding you. Good luck.

Why do people never go first to the manufacturer's website (Lexmark) to get software and drivers?

I'll also add that a Z65 I had required installation of the driver package before connecting the printer in order for the computer to recognize it properly. If you plugged it in first, you had to manually clean out registry entries and try again. The Z35 may be the same way, as some companies haven't yet grasped the concept of how USB installs are ideally supposed to work - plug it in, provide driver when prompted, live happily ever after.
